Sometimes, the most meaningful reflections begin long before we write a single word.
In our recent Collage as a Visual Tool at Nelson Mandela University, aspiring educators were invited to pause, create, and reflect on their identities as teachers. Through the simple acts of tearing, layering, juxtaposing, and arranging found images, participants explored the stories, values, and experiences that shape their teaching practice before capturing these insights through free writing.
It was a powerful reminder that reflection is not always linear. Sometimes our hands discover what our minds have not yet articulated.
Watching each unique collage emerge reinforced that there is no single way to be a teacher. Our identities are continually evolving, shaped by our experiences, our learners, our communities, and our hopes for education.
